The Magic After the Camera Goes Down

There is something absolutely charming about capturing an unguarded moment.

But sometimes as photographers, we find ourselves in a strange little dilemma: do we lift the camera and capture the moment, or do we put it aside and simply have a conversation?

More often than not, I choose the conversation.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve found myself with a camera in my hand, watching a moment unfold, only to lower it and start talking instead. Somehow, the conversation feels more important than the photograph.

And that’s where the irony lies.

We spend so much time looking for the moment, waiting for that fleeting expression, that perfect gesture, that fraction of a second when someone forgets the camera is there.

But sometimes, the most honest moments happen only after you stop photographing.

Nine out of ten times, I put the camera aside.

And perhaps that is exactly why the magic happens.
